  The path of modern Greek sports and school Physical Education is inextricably linked to the very history of the formation of the Greek state. Following four hundred years of Ottoman occupation, the liberated Greece had to face not only economic and infrastructural destruction. It had to reconstruct its national identity and organize its institutions, while simultaneously striving to keep pace with the advanced European states. For the newly established state, the physical development of youth was not merely a matter of health or recreation.
