Training Principles in Ancient Greece: A Scientific Approach (Part I)


Introduction

In modern Physical Education and Sports Science, training principles such as periodization, individuality, and progressive overload are often considered recent achievements. However, the study of ancient texts reveals that ancient Greek trainers (gymnastai) and physical educators (paidotribai) had developed a highly advanced, holistic, and scientifically grounded system of exercise. Training in antiquity was not a random physical activity. It was a dynamic process closely linked to the natural environment, anatomy, physiology, and the psychological profile of the trainee.

This article, serving as the first part of a broader study, analyzes two fundamental principles that shaped the design of ancient Greek training: the Principle of Weather and General Environmental Conditions and the Principle of Individuality (Physical and Psychological State).

 1. The Principle of Weather and General Environmental Conditions

Ancient Greek coaches recognized that the human body constantly interacts with its surroundings. Factors such as location, weather, season, temperature, and the specific time of day (morning, noon, or afternoon) were critical variables evaluated before any physical activity began. Additionally, the choice between training in an open-air (outdoor) or a closed (indoor) environment was determined based on environmental demands.

 Seasonality and Type of Exercise

Training routines were fully adapted to the seasons to maintain bodily homeostasis. Hippocrates explicitly notes that during the winter months, utilizing running (dromos) and wrestling (pale) is essential to properly warm up the body. Conversely, in the summer, he recommends practicing only wrestling—and in moderation—to prevent extreme exhaustion and overheating.

The Ergogenic Use of Oil and Dust

Applying oil (aleimma) and dust or powder (konis) to the athletes' bodies was not just a symbolic or aesthetic ritual. It served as a functional tool for thermoregulation and physical protection:


* In cold weather: The oil acted as an insulating layer, shielding muscles from the cold and preserving core body temperature.

* In hot weather: The specific choice and combination of oil and distinct types of dust helped manage sweat, protected the skin from solar radiation, and improved grip during wrestling.

 2. The Principle of Individuality: Physical and Psychological State

Perhaps the most significant achievement of ancient coaches was treating the athlete as a unified psychosomatic entity. Training was never applied in a mass-produced or mechanical manner; it was completely individualized.

The Psychological Factor as a Primary Criterion

The mood, character, mental state, and philosophical disposition of the youth were the very first elements evaluated by the paidotribai. If the trainee lacked the appropriate psychological readiness, the training load was immediately modified.

A prime example is how sexual life was treated as a psychophysical factor affecting performance. Philostratus points out that nocturnal emission (wet dreams) was a serious indicator for reducing training intensity. An athlete who experienced this was described as "katiphis" (dejected, lacking vitality and drive), making his body unready for heavy physical load.

 Physical Condition and Body Temperament

The morphology and internal temperament (krasis) of the body dictated the type of exercise required:


* Plethoric vs. Non-plethoric athletes: Athletes with an excess of energy or body mass received programs with higher volume and intensity to restore balance.

* Hot vs. Cold nature: The internal constitution of the athlete guided the trainer in selecting exercises that would either warm up or "cool down" the organism accordingly.


 Age Differentiation and Injury Management

Age was a key metric in programming. Galen formulated a highly advanced theory regarding older adults: the elderly should primarily exercise the stronger parts of their body. By doing so, the weaker or atrophied areas were trained indirectly and safely, avoiding direct strain.

In the case of injury or pathology, the principle of training modification was applied systematically:


* Injured athlete: The program immediately became lighter (hypotonic) to facilitate recovery.

* Localized atrophy: If a specific muscle group or body part showed signs of atrophy, targeted, specialized, and more intense exercise was prescribed for that area to restore symmetry.

 Conclusions

Ancient Greek trainers were not mere instructors of movement, but applied scientists of their time. By understanding the close relationship between the macrocosm (environment, weather) and the microcosm (the athlete's mind and body), they created a training system that promoted health, harmony, and athletic excellence. The second part of this article will analyze the principles of progression, loading, and specialization in ancient athletic events.
