Training Principles in Ancient Greece: A Scientific Approach (Part II)
Introduction
In the first part of our study, we analyzed how ancient Greek trainers (gymnastai and paidotribai) adapted exercise programs based on environmental conditions and the psychosomatic identity of the athlete. In this second part, we will explore two more fundamental principles of modern training science that have deep roots in antiquity: the Principle of Progressive Intensity (Gradual Loading) and the Principle of Talent Identification based on Somatotype (Somatometry).
1. The Principle of Progressive Intensity and Gradual Loading
Modern training science states that for biological adaptation and performance improvement to occur, training intensity and volume must increase gradually. Ancient Greeks had clear answers to this issue, knowing precisely when and how much to scale the physical workload.
Lesson Structure: Warm-up and Peak Intensity
Ancient coaches considered it unthinkable to begin intense training without proper preparation of the muscular system. Galen emphasizes that no exercise is permitted to start unless the body has first been softened through specialized warm-up friction and massage: "...before softening the entire body..." ("...prin malaxai sympan to soma...").
Even during the execution of a single exercise, the rhythm and "tone" (intensity) changed dynamically. Their approach was strictly progressive, with the peak effort strategically placed at the end of the session. As Galen characteristically notes: "One must intensify and sharpen the exercises toward the end" ("Epiteinein de kai paroxynein chri ta gymnasia pros to telos").
Means and Methods of Progressive Overload
The Greeks utilized specialized tools to increase resistance and stimulate new adaptations:
- Use of Halteres: These ancient dumbbells were used as added weights to increase strength and improve long jump performance.
- Running in the Sand: Runners trained in deep sand to increase the difficulty (intensity) and develop explosive power in the lower limbs.
- Lifting Heavy Objects: Progressive overload was achieved by lifting large stones or utilizing the body weight of a training partner (functional training).
- Use of Music (The Aulos Flute): The rhythm of the flute was used as a training tool to artificially accelerate the pace of movement and regulate intensity.
The "Tetrad" System
The most prominent example of periodization and alternating load in antiquity was the Tetrad system (a four-day training cycle):
- Day 1: Preparation / Light training.
- Day 2: High Intensity / Maximum overload.
- Day 3: Recovery / Relaxation and active rest.
- Day 4: Moderate Intensity / Skill and tactics.
The scientific validity of this progressive method is backed by Galen. He notes that he successfully treated a child's leg atrophy by applying this exact system of progressive exercise.
2. The Principle of Talent Identification and Somatotype (Somatometry)
Selecting the right children for specific sports was not left to chance. The ancients applied the principles of somatometry and anthropology to sports, evaluating precise anatomical traits.
Selection Criteria: "Light" vs. "Heavy" Events
The paidotribai closely examined a youth's body to decide whether they were suited for "light" events (koupha, such as running and jumping) or "heavy" events (barea, such as wrestling, boxing, and pankration). The core criteria included:
- Total body weight.
- Limb length (long arms and legs).
- Parents' height (used as a genetic predictor for future growth).
- Even minor anatomical features, such as long or short fingers.
The Evolution of Criteria: From the Classical to the Hellenistic Era
The selection criteria shifted radically over time, following the social and philosophical trends of each era:
- Classical Period (Measure and Harmony): The pentathlete was considered the ideal athlete type. He had to be tall, well-built, erect, and long-limbed. His physique had to obey the rules of measure, harmony, and aesthetic perfection, as immortalized in the sculptures of the time (e.g., the Doryphoros by Polykleitos).
- Hellenistic Era (Realism and Specialization): With the rise of professional athletics, the mindset became more realistic and utilitarian. Aesthetics were pushed aside. Winning became the primary goal. This led to the selection of extreme somatotypes (e.g., massively bulky wrestlers), sacrificing classical harmony for pure physical effectiveness.
The Pursuit of "Ambidexterity" (Isocheiria)
One of the most advanced concepts in ancient training was the pursuit of isocheiria (the ability to use both hands or sides of the body with equal skill). Through specialized drills, trainers worked to eliminate movement asymmetries. This very same principle is heavily used in modern sports today—especially in Basketball, Volleyball, and Soccer—where bilateral motor competence offers a massive competitive edge.
Conclusions
The second part of our analysis confirms that the ancient Greek training system was built on a solid scientific foundation. Understanding progressive intensity, utilizing periodization (the tetrad), selecting athletes through somatometric evaluation, and developing ambidexterity prove that ancient Greeks laid the groundwork for modern Sports Science thousands of years ago.
